Captain Henry's Country Buffet - Southport, NC

Captain Henry's Country Buffet located at the intersection of Southport-Supply Road and Long Beach Road in Southport, NC has officially closed. Located in the former Golden Corral building, Captain Henry's only survived 4 months in this tough economic environment. It's a shame they could not hold on a little longer as the busy tourist season looms just ahead.

The consensus around town and on Internet Restaurant Review Sites is that this restaurant is essentially the same as the former Golden Coral, just a different name. If the Golden Corral could not make it, it should come as no surprise that Captain Henry's would fare the same.

This business closing is one of many local businesses that have closed in the Southport area due to the economic downturn.

Unfortunately, I think there are still more to come.

  1. Why are so many restaurants closing? My wife and I loved the one that use to be upstairs in the marina building with the anchor out front. They had great food and service however, when we tried them in 2007 they were closed.

  2. Hi Tom, Thank you for your question. Southport area businesses are failing at an alarming rate because of the bad economy. Dozens of businesses have closed this winter and, unfortunately, I predict many more will close after this summer, which is not looking like it will be a very good tourist season. Southport's economy is largely based on real estate sales and tourism which go hand in hand. The real estate market has been all but decimated in this area and the tourists seem to be staying away because of the bad economy. Southport is simply not big enough of a town to support itself without tourists.

By the way, I believe the restaurant you are referring to is Fish Tales (http://www.southporttimes.com/fishtales.html) which closed in 2006.

Hope this sheds some light on your question.

    Best Regards,

    Ben
